Wangjiang Tower Park

Wangjiang Tower Park, Chengdu, Sichuan

Wangjiang (means overlooking a river from a distance) Tower Park sits on the southern bank of Jinjiang in Chengdu City. It is a memorial to a female poet of the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) - Xue Tao.

Xue Tao started writing poems at an early age. After her father's death, she became a singer and composed poems to entertain others for a living. Most of her poems reflected her sadness and yearning towards a happy life. The main structures built in the park are as a memorial to her, including Wangjiang Tower, Zhuojing Lou, Wanjian Pavilion and Wuyun Xianguan, etc. Xue Tao loved bamboo all her life. So people planted various bamboos in the garden. That is why the exuberance forest of bamboo first catches the eye of tourists. The majestic four-storied Wangjiang Tower in the park, also called Chong (grand) li (beautiful) Ge (pavilion), stands 39 meters (about 42.65 yards) high. The upper two stories are octagonal whilst the lower two are square. There is also a famous well named Xue Tao Well, it is said that Xue Tao used water from the well to make Xue Tao Paper (a kind of beautiful paper used to write poems on and be given to friends as gifts). Tourists can enjoy some interesting stories about the well.

Wangjiang Tower is a symbol of Chengdu City and Wangjiang Tower Park became the ideal place to appreciate bamboos in Chengdu City. If you are fortunate, you can see the Bamboo Culture Festival here.
